A legacy of compassion and community service
The Clearwater And District Food Bank Society was born from a simple but powerful idea: neighbors helping neighbors in times of need.
In the heart of Clearwater, BC, a small group of concerned community members recognized a growing need. Families were struggling to put food on the table, and there was no organized system to help. What started as informal food sharing among friends and neighbors soon grew into something much larger.
Driven by compassion and a commitment to their community, these founding members established the Clearwater And District Food Bank Society. They secured a small space, gathered initial donations, and opened their doors with one simple goal: ensure no one in their community would go hungry.
Word spread quickly about the food bank's mission. Local businesses began donating surplus food. Churches organized food drives. Schools encouraged students to contribute. What had started as a grassroots effort was becoming a true community partnership.
The food bank formalized its operations, established regular operating hours, and partnered with key community locations—including the Clearwater Credit Union and Buy-Low Foods—to make donations convenient and accessible for everyone.
The success of the food bank has always depended on the dedication of volunteers. From sorting donations to packing hampers, from greeting clients to managing inventory, volunteers are the backbone of our organization. Over the years, hundreds of community members have contributed their time and talents.
Many volunteers have personal connections to the mission—some were once clients themselves, now giving back to help others in similar situations. This cycle of compassion strengthens the entire community.
After experimenting with different schedules, the food bank settled into its now-familiar rhythm: open every Thursday from 9 AM to noon. This consistent schedule allows community members to plan ahead and ensures volunteers can commit to regular shifts.
Thursday mornings have become a gathering time—not just for receiving food, but for connecting with neighbors, sharing stories, and building relationships that extend beyond the food bank walls.
Today, the Clearwater And District Food Bank Society continues to evolve and adapt to meet changing community needs. We've weathered economic downturns, natural disasters, and global challenges, always remaining steadfast in our commitment to serve.
As we look to the future, we remain guided by the same principles that inspired our founders: compassion, dignity, and community. We're proud of how far we've come, but we know the work is never finished. As long as there are people in need, we'll be here to help.
